ABOUT MY PRACTICE

Carrie Johnson, MFT #79984

Carrie Johnson, MFT #79984

Your child has received a diagnosis or has an identified developmental or learning difference. Now what?

Your family might feel lost navigating multiple systems, including school/special education, foster care/adoption, medical/psychiatric, occupational therapy, speech and language services, and behavior analysis. I can help. I am experienced in case management and collaboration and I want to help you navigate what will be most helpful for your child while also providing a space for you to vent, share progress, and gain strategies that are individualized to your child and your family. It can be painful and frustrating to accept that your child might experience more challenges than their peers; I can help your child and family navigate feelings of burnout, self-blame, grief, and uncertainty about what happens next. Most importantly, I will help you and your child recognize and bring out their unique greatness!

I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT79984) with over ten years of experience working with families, couples, adults, and youth of all ages. Currently full-time in private practice, I have years of previous experience at non-profit agencies treating a diverse range of challenges, diagnoses, family and life circumstances.  My clients find me approachable, genuine, and playful or irreverent enough to connect with even the most challenging children and teenagers. I have particular specialties in:

  • helping families navigate multiple systems after a diagnosis (ADHD, depression, anxiety, disruptive behaviors), developmental, or learning difference is identified

  • working with attachment and feelings identification and expression (for both children & couples)

  • treating risky behaviors or suicidal thoughts stemming from mental health issues or trauma

  • the complex challenges that arise in foster care or post-adoption

  • integrating mindfulness practices in the real world

I am trained in and use evidence-based practices, including Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples, trauma-informed practices, art and play therapy, mindfulness and meditation, and a positive parenting and discipline model called the Nurtured Heart Approach.

My approach is strengths-based and systemic, meaning that, particularly in my work with families and couples, our goal is to gain insight about each member’s role and how they impact the functioning of the whole system. This approach reduces blame and shame and empowers each person to make changes that will positively impact their relationships. For individuals, systemic therapy examines the way that life experiences, family history, culture, biological and psychological factors, and social relationships impact mental health and behaviors.

I have a master’s degree from Northern Illinois University in Applied Family and Child Studies and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in Psychology.

Please contact me by phone or email to schedule a free 15 minute consultation to discuss how we can work together.

I am committed to providing affirmative therapy services to LGBTQIA+ clients and their families.

This includes related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees. • Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service. • If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. • Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
